When talking about elevators, escalators, and automatic building doors, it is sometimes necessary to use technical terms and acronyms; so we have created a small glossary to help you understand them. Click on a word or phrase to see its definition.
A device that has two related and interdependent functions: (1) to prevent (electrically) the operation of the hoisting machine, as long as the door is locked in the closed position; (2) to prevent (mechanically) the opening of the car door from within it, unless the elevator is in the door zone and stopped.
three-phase power supply
Power supply that provides three-phase alternating current.
cabin battery
User interface for passengers in the cabin. Includes call buttons, alarm buttons, door open buttons, etc.
main power supply
The device that supplies power to the elevator. Also known as the power grid.
balustrade/parapet
Safety guardrail on the roof of the cabin that prevents falling into the running compartment.
door closing warning
System used with automatic door operation, which issues a warning signal and closes doors with reduced torque and speed. The door closing warning is activated if the door remains open beyond a predetermined time.
elevator double entrance
Elevator with entrances on two opposite sides of the shaft.
fire elevator
Option whereby a designated elevator is removed from service for the exclusive use of firefighters.
building settlement
Lowering of the building as a result of sinking into the ground or contraction of concrete.
passenger and freight elevator
Elevator intended primarily for transporting goods, which are usually accompanied by people.
counterweight area
The counterweight stroke area in the stroke pit, isolated by the counterweight divider.
passenger elevator
Elevator mainly used to transport people.
early door opening
System that initiates the opening of the car doors before the complete stop at the landing. The doors start opening when the cabin is in the door zone and the speed has reached below the limit allowed by current regulations.
freight elevator
Elevator equipped for transporting goods, forklifts, etc.
cabin shock absorber
A device designed to stop a car going below its normal travel limit by storing or absorbing and dissipating its kinetic energy.
cabin height
The height measured from the rough floor to the lowest part of the roof.

emergency alarm
Emergency system installed in all cabins, consisting of siren, button in the cabin, and uninterruptible power supply, usually a battery.
booth
Cabin structure, excluding interior elements (not integrated).
